Bratislava — my new home, source: Kayak

As the sun gracefully descended, casting its warm glow over the enchanting city of Bratislava, I found myself enveloped in a tapestry of thoughts. With each purposeful step along my evening walk, a gentle breeze whispered through the trees, urging me to unravel the enigma of my recent weight gain. How had I strayed so far from the path of self-care? Did my unwavering pursuit of knowledge blind me to the needs of my own body? Was I setting an example for my community by neglecting the very vessel that would carry me through my medical journey?

As the soothing rhythm of my footsteps carried me forward, I couldn’t help but reflect on the profound impact of nature on my life. It wasn’t long ago that I began these walks, drawn not by a concern for my well-being, but by a yearning to immerse myself in Slovakia’s stunning natural wonders. Am in the exam season. The allure of experiencing the changing seasons after long days buried in chemistry and biology textbooks offered solace and respite, breathing life into my weary soul.

I have come to love this bush

Oh, the marvels of nature! Unlike the constant sunset time I had known in Kenya, Slovakia’s late spring gifted me with the spectacle of the sun bidding farewell to the day a little later each evening. It was a mesmerizing transformation, one that mirrored the changes I longed to see within myself. And the temperature, reminiscent of the warmth of my Kenyan home, erased the boundaries of seasons and welcomed me with open arms.

Bratislava is a panoramic sight to behold, especially during summer evenings

Thoughts of home brought memories flooding back. In Mununga, Muranga, my childhood was filled with adventure as I traversed the 4.5-kilometer journey to school each day. Nestled near the breathtaking Aberdare Ranges, I navigated hills and valleys, a tapestry of nature’s wonders unfolding before me. How I reveled in those moments — splashing through crystal-clear streams, traversing verdant bushes, sharing laughter with my schoolmates. The mornings, though chilly, were a testament to my resilience, not quite as bone-chilling as the Slovakian winter, but enough to hasten our steps, avoiding the dreaded punishment of frozen buttocks or hands.

But in the transition to Slovakia, a new reality took hold. The ease and convenience of Bratislava’s public transportation replaced the adventure of my daily treks. No longer did I immerse myself in the rhythm of movement, the very essence of my being. It was this dearth of physical challenges that silently conspired against me, causing unwanted pounds to accumulate around my waistline. My medical books echoed their warnings, instilling fear in my heart with every mention of the dreaded “tummy.”

Today, however, I made a profound decision. A decision to honor the vessel that housed my dreams of becoming a doctor. A decision to prioritize my own well-being alongside the care I aspired to provide others. And so, as I embarked on my evening walk through the captivating parks of Bratislava, a newfound determination surged through my veins like a healing elixir.

With each step, I embraced movement as the key to unlocking a healthier, more vibrant existence. Were these mere footsteps, or a symphony resonating with the deepest parts of my being? As the seasons transformed, so would I, shedding not only physical weight but also the burdens of neglect that had weighed me down.

In the sprawling parks and winding streets of Bratislava, a metamorphosis was underway. Through the language of movement, I would script a narrative of resilience and vitality, inspiring others to embark on their own journeys of self-discovery. For how could I preach the importance of caring for others if I failed to care for myself?

As the sun bid its final farewell, casting a kaleidoscope of colors across the horizon, I embraced the symphony of my own footsteps, entwining them with the whispers of nature. In the twilight of that evening, I began a new chapter — a chapter where the rhythm of my steps became a beacon of health and happiness. I set forth on a path where the pursuit of knowledge harmonized with the preservation of self, echoing through the corridors of my mind and resonating in the hearts of those who witnessed my transformation.

I walked 6, 65km today

And so, dear reader, as you embark on your own journey, may you too find solace in the embrace of movement, and may your footsteps become the resounding anthem of your own well-being. For in the pursuit of knowledge, may we never forget the wisdom bestowed upon us by the symphony of nature.
