In the tranquil town of Githabai, nestled in the picturesque beauty of Nyandarua, I found myself at a crossroads. The completion of my KCSE exams ignited a deep desire within me to spread my wings and explore the world beyond Kenya. The time had come to pursue my dreams of studying abroad. With unwavering determination, I embarked on a path that would lead me to the unknown.

A Recipe for Success

Armed with aspirations and a heart full of hope, I meticulously prepared my applications for regular decision. Aware of the need to stand out among countless applicants, I sought to enhance my chances by procuring extraordinary recommendations. Being a beneficiary of the prestigious Wings To Fly program and an integral part of the Equity Leadership Program, I realized that the recommendation of my Equity Branch manager in Naivasha would infuse my application with the much-needed spice. Moreover, the endorsement of my internship as a relationship officer at the bank would set me apart, amplifying my chances of securing a coveted spot at an Ivy league institution.

A Journey Unveiled

As fate would have it, the recommendations needed to be sent physically to the United States, prompting a visit to the bank. In a bold departure from the ordinary, I resolved to embark on a remarkable adventure, one that would fuse my love for nature with the weight of my aspirations. Rather than boarding a matatu for the noble task at hand, I opted to traverse the path on a bicycle. It was an opportunity to find solace and respite amidst the arduous process of refining my essays.

The Enchanting Escarpment

The rugged beauty of the Great Rift Valley beckoned me, promising an enchanting ride. Down the precipice I descended, the wind caressing my face as I hurtled toward the valley below. The majesty of the savannah unfolded before my eyes, captivating scenes of humanity seamlessly interwoven with nature’s rhythmic dance. And there, from the summit of the escarpment, I beheld the ethereal beauty of Lake Naivasha, its tranquil waters shimmering under the midday sun.

A Tumultuous Turn

The journey seemed to progress effortlessly, until an unexpected twist threatened to derail my plans. Panic surged through my veins as I realized that my brakes had failed. My once serene ride had transformed into a harrowing descent, a terrifying symphony of speed and vulnerability. I hurtled downward, my body hurtling at a supersonic pace, capturing the attention of stunned onlookers. The impending danger left me grappling with a critical question: How could I save my own life?

A Desperate Dive

Amidst the chaos of the uncontrollable descent, a beacon of hope emerged — a mound of soil stood before me, resembling a makeshift landing spot for my airborne bicycle. With a mix of instinct and desperation, I aimed for that modest mound, praying for a safe landing. The world turned into a blur as time seemed to suspend, until everything faded to black.

Awakening and Resilience

Awakening from my unconscious state, I found myself entangled in a whirlwind of pain. Blood trickled from a gash on my chin, a permanent scar etched upon my flesh, serving as a reminder of the perils I had faced. Regaining composure, I felt the unwavering support of those around me. A compassionate woman, who had witnessed my fall, offered me first aid, her kindness rekindling the flicker of resilience within me.

Though battered and bruised, I summoned the strength to persevere. The pain coursing through my body served as a poignant reminder of the importance of attention to detail. Reflecting on that fateful day, I recognized my oversight — the failure to inspect my brakes before embarking on the journey. A momentary lapse could have cost me my life. Since then, I have cultivated an unwavering dedication to prevention, cherishing the adage that prevention is always better than cure.

A Life Transformed

As I sit here now, gazing at the opportunity I so ardently pursued, I am filled with gratitude. The arduous journey I undertook, the risks I faced, and the lessons I learned have shaped me into the person I am today. Nature, in all its awe-inspiring glory, served as the backdrop for my transformation. It taught me the power of determination, the importance of embracing the beauty that surrounds us, and the indomitable spirit that resides within each of us.

In that daring escapade, amidst the hills and valleys of Kenya, I found not only my recommendations but also an unyielding resolve to seize every opportunity and conquer the challenges that lay before me. And as I progress with this new chapter of my life, I carry with me the scars, both visible and invisible, as a testament to my unwavering commitment to make a difference in the world.

The tumultuous experience I encountered on that perilous descent ignited a profound awakening within me, forever shaping my perspective as a medical student. As I nursed my wounds and contemplated the consequences of a momentary oversight, a newfound appreciation for the significance of paying attention to detail permeated my being. The scar on my chin became more than a physical reminder; it morphed into a symbol of my unwavering commitment to preventive medicine. Like a painter meticulously blending colors on a canvas, I vowed to weave a tapestry of health and well-being by championing the power of prevention. From that day forward, my passion for medicine was infused with a profound understanding that true healing lies not only in treating the symptoms but also in identifying and addressing the root causes of ailments. With each patient encounter, I will delve into the depths of their medical histories, listening intently to the intricacies of their lives, leaving no stone unturned in my quest to uncover potential risks and avert future afflictions. In the realm of medicine, I am an ardent advocate for the power of minute details, as I believe that a stitch in time can indeed save countless lives.
